My Yoga

Melanie in the studio, BosaOne of the most asked questions by students, whether a beginner or someone who has long followed a particular style of yoga is ‘’What type of yoga do you teach’’? What is my way of working? While it is easy to roll off a few names of my own ‘gurus’ or influences in my past, and make the questioner feel comfortable that they recognise a ‘name’ or that they are not going to be faced with something too new or different in their yoga practice, it does not really answer the question behind the question. How can I face my fear, to try a new teacher, something different.

a yoga session in progressThe fear is real and understandable, and the best way to describe my teaching is that I let you the student teach yourself what is best for your body, to make your practice your own, a teaching style that emphasises undoing more than doing. My approach to yoga is directed by the breath, gravity and the mobility of the spine. A key element of the yoga practise is to allow the breathing and poses to gradually unfold, without effort and strain, with alert undoing, with enjoyment. Being awake and listening inwardly to the body’s intelligence brings the yoga postures to life.

Melanie leads a yoga sessionMy own yoga journey began over 30 years ago, together with music therapy. The form of yoga I teach becomes tailored to the different physical abilities and problems of the students. Yoga is not about the upward climbing journey of becoming, ambition and achievement. It’s an inward journey: playfully exploring, nourishing and wise. My yoga philosophy is influenced by observing the nature around us. The freedom with which animals move instinctively, the way in which a flower unfolds into the space around it, how a tree grounds itself deeply into the earth. The beauty when things are spontaneous and natural, the enjoyment we feel when that natural movement is applied to our own bodies.

The week long yoga workshops in Bosa include three hours daily yoga 10.00-13.00 (times may vary) Sunday-Friday (for Saturday arrivals/departures), Wednesday-Monday (Tuesday arrivals/departures), and Tuesday - Sunday (Monday arrivals/departures) - see dates & prices.

Yoga mats are provided. I also teach private lessons.
